Josh Kelly

Senior Recruitment Consultant

Long term career progression keeps me focused. I’m always aware of what I need to do in order to progress and reach the next level. Short term, Opus has some amazing incentives from weekly rewards to super incentives like trips abroad.

There are many employers out there... What made you choose Opus?

When I interviewed with Opus, I had a few opportunities in front of me, so I asked everyone who interviewed me why they joined.

Time and again, they all mentioned they’d moved away from other businesses because of the progression opportunities and flexibility on offer at Opus. The career path is clear, and decisions aren’t as restricted as they may be in other corporate environments.

Tell us what you think about our company culture.

The Opus culture is what defines us as a business; ambitious, challenging, fast-paced and results-driven.

What sets us apart is the collaboration of consultants. Sales can often create a selfish environment, but that just isn’t the case here; there’s a big emphasis on sharing information and helping each other reach a common goal.

Tell us a bit about your role…

I am one of two permanent division managers in Bristol, co-managing a team of 27 consultants. My main focus is on consultants with non-development markets; Infrastructure, Security, Testing, Architecture, BI & Data, alongside working towards a personal billings target.

I’m hoping to go out to Hong Kong as one of the founding members of the new office.

What do you get up to on a typical day?

My days consist of maintaining business with my clients and candidates in the infrastructure market, alongside management of my team. This can consist of training and developing a trainee consultant, or helping a senior consultant with advanced business scenarios.

What’s the best thing about working here?

The best thing about working for Opus is the bond between the teams. Most people dread going to work, but at Opus you’re spending each day with your mates.

Great earning and career potential and working with people you like – I couldn’t ask for anything more.

What’s your opinion on our L&D?

Within the recruitment industry, L&D tends to involve being sent away for a week’s worth of training, then being left to cope on your own, but at Opus you’re provided with ongoing support.

From trainee to group director, you’ll always receive first-class training and given new opportunities to develop.

What are the two most important things you’ve taken away from training?

A highlight for me was going through the management development programme, skilling me up to manage different personalities.

The second thing would be learning to manage all aspects of recruitment – perm and contract to delivery.

What incentivises you at work?

Long term career progression keeps me focused. I’m always aware of what I need to do in order to progress and reach the next level. Short term, Opus has some amazing incentives from weekly rewards to super incentives like trips abroad.

What's been your biggest achievement?

I’d say starting as a fresh graduate with no sales experience and progressing to division manager in five years is the achievement I’m most proud of.

Alongside this, I’ve been on some great incentive trips – Ibiza, Madrid, Cheltenham races, and Silverstone F1.

What do you think makes someone successful at Opus?

Determination, resilience and trainability.

To anyone thinking about applying, what would you tell them?

Definitely do it. When I interviewed five years ago I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into, but it’s the best thing I have done and there’s no looking back.

What do you do in your spare time?

I enjoy nights out, holidays and mountain biking.
