Commercial Director

Location: 125 Finsbury Pavement, Moorgate, London, EC2A 1NQ, GB


Reporting to the CEO, this is a board level role for a privately owned recruitment and training business, focused on the Technology and Energy markets. This role could be based in Bristol, or Moorgate, London.

  • Investment strategy includes expanding current offices, further International expansion, M&A, developing new business models, investing in the newer parts of the business including tech training and talent solutions, and investing in tech and systems to improve business efficiency.

What you’ll be doing

The primary focus of the Commercial Director will be to help the Group accelerate its growth by optimising spend and making commercial decisions that balance risk and the Company’s ability to generate revenue, with the sole focus of maximising profit. 

This may include short strategic decisions – such as back office transformations or seeking out patterns that may be affecting the business’ ability to convert sales revenue to profit.  As well as immediate, tactical decisions e.g. on the terms of business surrounding a sale (balancing the impact on revenue, cash flow and risk).

The jobholder will lead and manage the Non Sales functions to optimise centralised spend on support services and business systems and to ensure that the business is receiving a service that is both high quality, efficient and cost effective and are built to support both operational and strategic business objectives.

Working closely with the Group Managing Director, the Commercial Director will track long term trends in Sales performance and activities, and contribute to the development of strategic plans to address potential issues on the horizon, before they become ‘road blocks’.

The Commercial Director will ensure that there is a symbiotic relationship between the Sales and Non Sales functions, ensuring that sales revenue generation remains the core focus of the business and work is being delivered in the right place to give the Group the best chance of success.

The jobholder will also participate in the recruitment Board meetings with the Sales Directors as and when required, giving advice to the Directors of each business unit on how to run their business more efficiently. They will be also be involved in the monthly Group Board Meetings. The jobholder will use these meetings to recommend any big strategic or operational changes (positive or negative) to the CEO and Founder.

The Commercial Director will also be a champion of the growth agenda; they will have a good understanding of the recruitment and tech market trends and regulatory changes to recommend new markets and new ways of generating profit, or mitigating risk (e.g. GDPR and IR35).They will also lead from the front on all major legal and compliance issues, enlisting and endorsing the help of specialists when needed.

Finally, this role will involve negotiation and decision making in major commercial arrangements, for clients, partners and suppliers alike and to participate in the preparation of sizeable business proposals, bids and tenders in conjunction with other members of the Senior Team.
