Vickie Thomas

Principal Recruitment Consultant

The drive and energy is what’s different to others. It’s traditionally a very male-dominated career, but as a female, I certainly don’t feel as part of the minority. We’re all one team, working toward shared goals.

There are many employers out there... What made you choose Opus?

When I was interviewed by Darren, it became obvious I was joining a company that was going places. His passion and ambition made me want to be part of the exciting growth. To me, it was the perfect blend of corporate and family feel.

Tell us a bit about your role…

I’m a Principal Recruitment Consultant here at Opus. My role involves placing permanent PHP and Front End Developers across the South Coast of the UK, from Bournemouth and Brighton to Portsmouth and Southampton.

What do you get up to on a typical day?

I speak to multiple candidates and clients on a daily basis, some new and some existing. I have built a great chemistry with both clients and candidates in my particular niche, and I endeavour to find super talented developers for my IT clients.

What’s the best thing about working here?

My colleagues. I love the guys I work with and I hope they feel the same about me! We have a really good environment inside and outside of work.

What’s your opinion on our L&D?

We have a brilliant training team here at Opus, but we don’t just rely on these guys; we also hold training sessions based on the technology we specialise in, bringing in local Professional Developers to show us what code it, what it does, how it looks, what it can do, etc.

That way, when I speak to my clients I know the language they’re talking and exactly what they’re looking for.

What are the two most important things you’ve taken away from training?

1. I’ve developed a certain expertise in the technology I now specialise in.

2. LinkedIn Recruiter – it’s a very powerful tool.

What incentivises you at work?

Being part of the billing crew! As a Recruitment Consultant, you never want to blank in a month. So the pressure of not blanking incentivises me. With this comes a healthy bonus and other perks such as Lunch Club, weekends away, etc.

What's been your biggest achievement?

Placing 11 developers in one month.

What do you think makes someone successful at Opus?

Thick skin and determination!

To anyone thinking about applying, what would you tell them?

Go for it. If you’re not scared of working long hours, happy to start from the bottom up, learn something new, be able to take knockbacks, then apply.

Recruitment really does test you as a person – you might think it’s not the job for you in your first few weeks, but then it starts to click. If you have the staying power for that click to happen, then go for it!

What do you do in your spare time?

I look after my children (1 and 4) and my husband!
