Joey Rickman

Management Accountant

To succeed in the finance team, it’s important that you’re a good team player. We all work closely together and get along very well.

There are many employers out there... What made you choose Opus?

My background is in the builder’s merchant industry, which isn’t the most interesting, so I wanted to try something more dynamic.

Previous experiences have shown that roles are always oversold, and the reality never lives up to expectations. When I interviewed at Opus the limitations and frustrations of the role were talked about at length. This was an honest approach which was refreshing compared to previous experiences.

I was also looking for a team with a better social life, and I’ve definitely found that here.

Tell us what you think about our company culture.

I’ve previously worked in environments where people sit at the same desk for 30 years; Opus has only existed for a fraction of that time, so the culture is ever changing and there’s a real focus on innovation.

Tell us a bit about your role…

As a Management Accountant, I report on the monthly results. I am also involved in budgeting, forecasting, cash flow and provide ad-hoc analysis for a number of stakeholders.

What do you get up to on a typical day?

Mostly I just play on Excel. It’s great fun!

What’s the best thing about working here?

The team I work in, most of the time they are pretty great.

What incentivises you at work?

We have limited structured incentives in Finance, however, I can self-motivate and the knowledge that a few well-placed Excel formulae can aid a team member is all the incentive I need.

What's been your biggest achievement?

I built the 2018 budget models and helped coordinate the budgeting process, ensuring it was delivered in a timely and accurate manner.

What do you think makes someone successful at Opus?

To succeed in the finance team, it’s important that you’re a good team player. We all work closely together and get along very well.

To anyone thinking about applying, what would you tell them?

If you’re thinking of applying for a role in operations/finance, I would highly recommend it. We have an unusual culture here that I’ve not experienced elsewhere – days are rarely dull!

What do you do in your spare time?

I like to keep active. I’m a keen cyclist and have also competed in marathons and triathlons. I’m currently training for the London marathon and Bath half.

I’m also a keen cook, constantly experimenting with new recipes and flavours.
